Overview
This article asks how public spaces shaped by Muslim civility can contribute to the renewal of Islamic civilisation. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar serves as a case through which to examine hospitality, compassion, justice, encounter, and inter-civilisational dialogue in a globally visible setting. The analysis treats public space as more than a site of consumption: it can create conditions for shared experience, moral communication, and the contemporary reinterpretation of inherited ethical principles. By bringing diverse religious, cultural, ethnic, and class constituencies into sustained proximity, the tournament offered a limited but instructive example of Islamicate societies negotiating tradition and modernity. The article’s contribution is to connect debates about tajdīd to the design and ethical use of public institutions and spaces.
